AI Database Tools

This guide describes the various Generative AI features available on databases at the Nancy Thompson Learning Commons.

Proquest Research Assistance

Proquest’s AI Research Assistant, available in many but not all of its databases and ebook platforms, works in two ways:

1. It can help to find content by offering suggestions to revise your search query.

2. It can aid in evaluating results by providing a quick overview of full-text articles, as well as related research questions to consider.

Searching

The AI Research Assistant offers suggestions of terms to help you narrow down or tailor your search. These terms are generated by an LLM based on your initial query. They will appear in a row below the search bar:

Evaluating and Related Research

When viewing a full-text article, the AI Research Assistant appears in a sidebar, with prompts to display:

  • Key Takeaways
  • Important Concepts
  • Essential Details
  • Findings & Conclusions
  • Visualize this Document's Topics
  • Related Research Topics

You can also ask questions of the AI which then generates answers from the full text of the document using Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques; no data from other documents or from public LLMs is used to generate them. However, it is still not a substitute for reading the entire article and should only be used as a guide to determine whether the article is suitable for your research.

  • The AI options for some articles may be more limited due to the author or publisher restricting its use on their materials.
