JSTOR advises users to not enter personal information into the tool because JSTOR will be reviewing conversation histories in order to improve the tool. Please see JSTOR's documentation for more information about the AI Research Tool.
JSTOR’s AI Research Tool, released in September 2025, works in two ways:
1. It can help to find content with a semantic search; and,
2. It can aid in evaluating and exploring results.
The tool works with journal articles, book chapters, and research reports, but not with images, audio, video, or text-based primary sources found in JSTOR
To use the tool, you must create and log into a free JSTOR account.
Semantic Search
The Semantic Results option appears on the results page, allow you to toggle between “semantic” and “keyword” results. Choosing “semantic results” reflect more of a natural language search than using a traditional keyword search, selecting the top 25 available results.

Interacting with Content
When viewing an article, chapter or report, an option to toggle the AI Research Tool “on” will appear on the upper right. If you choose to use it, a chat-like sidebar will allow you to ask questions and interact with the work, as well as show related content.
